DOMINION CONSULTING, INC. provides field evaluation and petrographic examination services for sand and gravel deposits and quarry rock for use in Portland cement products. We also analyze rock proposed for erosion control and dimension stone.
Our field work assists pit and quarry owners identify zones of gravel with harmful coatings, highly weathered rock, clay seams, potentially reactive rocks, and joint and fracture systems that produce inferior materials. We observe and sample materials from stockpiles in operating pits and quarries, exposed faces of non-producing quarries, and excavated trenches and borings in undeveloped pit and quarry areas (ASTM C295).
The examination of quarry rock at its source is essential to its evaluation for erosion control and aids in the planning of the subsequent laboratory examinations. Some large-scale features, such as certain zones of weakness and impurities, are often not observable in hand-size specimens. Erosion control applications typically use riprap stone, armor stone, or breakwater stone and rock for groin and gabion structures (ASTM D4992). |
